Artist Profile

Legendary artist Jaganath Ahivasi finished his education in Art from the JJ School of Arts, Mumbai in 1926. He was the recipient of the G. Solomons Medal in 1935, Mumbai and Gold Medal from Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. He was the Head of Department in Painting, JJ School of Arts, Mumbai, until he retired in 1956.

His works from part of various prestigious collections around the world. Jaganath Ahivasi's contribution to modern Indian art lies in the fact that he preferred going to the traditional roots of Indian Miniature painting and using bright, flat colours with a flat application in his decorative compositions and mural. Some of his famous works include "The Message", "Subhadra and Arjuna" and "Departure of Meera" which was presented by the then Prime Minister of India, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to Chou-En-Lai, the Prime Minister of China.
