K.C.S.Paniker his teacher had a deep influence on him and he  encouraged him to follow his impulse fully. He received recognition as a  painter early in his life and he participated in several important group and  solo exhibitions in India and abroad. Vasudev became popular with his Vriksha  series which he did in the seventies that further elaborated into the Mithuna  Series, through a series of drawings and copper relief works. Thereafter he  explored many themes like Humanscapes, He & She series, Hayavadana and  Ganesha. In his entire works one can see that seems often spill into one  another and they reappear over and over again, like old refrains. He uses  similar lyrical lines and brilliant colours.  Vasudev also worked closely with  the master weavers to create tapestries in silk featuring the different themes  he has been exploring over the years. Vasudev’s paintings teem with a  multiplicity of images that are drawn from the extraordinary repertoire of  ideas to which his artistic mind and heart has always been open. Over the years  he has worked in several mediums at the same time. Vasudev has borrowed from  and contributed to other media and art. In the seventies Vasudev served as an  art Director for a number of “new wave” meaningful films. He also did a set of  line drawings based on selected poems of A.K. Ramanujan, the renowned poet,  linguist and folklorist who was also a close friend. As one of the founder  members of the Cholamandal Artists’ Village, Vasudev explores the exciting  challenge of working in different materials such as beaten metal objects and  batik style paintings on cloth as well as his canvases.  In the early days, they  were done in a heavy impasto. Later, however, Vasudev realized that he could  integrate the linear impulse that is the most significant aspect of the South  Indian style with both colour and lyricsm. Simple geometrical shapes provide a  frame to the composition that has an intuitive presence. Vasudev has also been  on the Executive Board of the Lalit Kala Akademi.
